SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's rowing heads back out on the water for the WIRA championships Saturday and Sunday.
The Broncos have struggled with injuries all season. They head into the weekend with some changes to their regular lineups due to lack of health, but are still excited about what they can accomplish.
"We had to make some last minute changes when the seventh seat of our Varsity 8 Valerie Bright '18 suffered a non-athletic related wrist fracture over the weekend," Santa Clara head coach John Wojtkiewicz said. "In addition our three seat from that crew, Kelby Nardoni '17, is out with the flu. We moved up Cannon Passano '19 and Katie Malueg '19 into their seats, and they've been doing a great job helping the boat continue to pick up speed. Despite an untested new lineup, the Varsity eight has been putting down some good times and splits. We're excited at what the possibilities are for this boat."
Several of the changes have shown promise in practice runs and have Wojtkiewicz optimistic about the results come race day.
"We moved Leah Senatro '19 and Dominique Dold '18 into the varsity pair, and this is a combo that has been working very well in practice," Wojtkiewicz said. "They've been getting stronger and stronger every day and I'm excited to see what they can do. The novice four of Lalie Plecq '19, Caitlin Lyons '18, Daryl Fallon '19, Gabby Tordillos '19 and Tanja Jeremaz '19 has had some good practices the last few days and I think they will be in the mix when it comes down to race day."
