Women's Golf Finishes 11th at Bay Area Classic

VALLEJO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's golf team finished 11th at the fifth annual Bay Area Classic Wednesday afternoon, firing a final round 345 to conclude the tournament with a two-day total of 694. Despite the rainy conditions the Broncos' second round total was four shots better than day one.

Nikki Mack followed her opening round 92 with a team-low 12-over par, 84, on Wednesday, finishing her 57th in the tournament with her two-round total of 176. Candice Palmer was the Broncos' top finisher, ending the tournament in 35th place after her final round 86, giving her a two-day total of 26-over par (170).

Courtney Dimpel-Composti also carded an 86 to finish in 56th place at 31-over par (175). Meggie Fagundes finsihed 46th with her final round 89 giving her a 36-hole total of 29-over par(173). Jessica Lamberty shot her second consecutive 94 to finish in 63rd place at 44-over par (188).

No. 10 Cal continued its hot play on day two, easily winning the tournament by 25 strokes over No. 9 Washington. The Golden Bears finished the tournament with a two-day team total of 25-over par, 601. The Huskies finished with a team total of 626, 18 shots ahead of the University of San Francisco.

Sarah Huarte claimed the individual title after firing her second consecutive round of even-par, 72. Her 144 total was seven strokes better than teammate Sophia Sheridan (+7) and eight shots better than Sung Ea Lee (+8) of Washington.

The Broncos will continue their 2003 season at the Duck Invitational hosted by the Univeristy of Oregon in Eugene on March 10-11.
