SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Santa Clara University women's golf team turned in solid rounds of 305 and 311 in the first day of the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational at Almaden Golf and Country Club.
In a 12-team tournament field consisting of five schools ranked in the top 31 nationally, Santa Clara out played No. 30 Washington, host San Jose State and WCC rival San Francisco. The Broncos will enter final round play Tuesday eight strokes outside of fourth place.
Senior Miki Ueoka shot rounds of 76 and 75 and is currently in eighth on the individual leaderboard. Classmate Lauren Oh fired an opening round 75 and is tied for 19th.
Santa Clara's new women's golf head coach Krystal Kelly was hoping to have the Broncos post team scores of 314 or better in all three rounds and SCU has accomplished that goal through its two rounds Monday.
"Today was interesting, we had a fog delay in the morning," said Kelly. "We had our practice round on Saturday, then had brief practice yesterday. Those proved to be really benificial for us, preparing for the round and the delay today. The girls handled things really well. Lauren (Oh) was really focusing on the process out there. I was really happy to see that."
The Broncos' strong play has the team paired with No. 22 UC Davis and UC Irvine tomorrow.
"Tomorrow will be a big challenge," added Kelly. "To play against teams that we know we should be competing with will be good for us."
