SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Santa Clara University women's golf team turned in its best round of the season this afternoon at Silver Creek Country Club to take a 27-shot lead after Day One of its own tournament, the SCU Colby Invitational.

SCU had four players post rounds in the 70's, including tournament-leading scores of 75 posted by Bronco teammates Taylor Camany and Balbina Guajardo. Tamara Surtees fired a 76 and Morgan McClure shot a 78.

"Really happy with the way we played today," said Santa Clara head coach Krystal Kelly. "It was interesting, we went to the (SCU) volleyball game on Saturday, to see how their team reacts to each play, because in volleyball you have to get right back into the action after each point. I think we learned a lot from that. Each stroke does count and your attitude and reaction to each shot has a lot to do with it."

Marygrace Colby (pictured with the team above), a long-time Santa Clara coach and administrator at the University, whom the tournament is named after was on hand to watch the action Monday.

"I am really thrilled to see this tradition continue," said Colby, who was the primary coach for most every women's team at SCU during the early years of women's athletics on the Mission Campus . "Krystal (Kelly) has a great perspective, coming from an ex-player's point of view. She is instilling confidence in this team that they have the ability to win and it was good to see them play so well today."

Santa Clara, Northern Colorado and Cal Poly will tee it up in the second and final round tomorrow morning beginning at 8 a.m.

Tournament Field (3 teams): Santa Clara, Cal Poly and Northern Colorado.
Details: 36-hole event. Both days will begin with 8 a.m. local tee times. The field will play one round of 18 holes on Monday and one final round of 18 holes on Tuesday
