Broncos Bring Aggressive Approach Into Fresno State’s Lexus Classic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Scoring and the right scoring mentality has been the focus for the Santa Clara University women's golf team in preparation for the 2012 Fresno State Lexus Classic, March 12-13 at Copper River Country Club.

The proven talents of junior transfer Balbina Guajardo - the Great West Conference Player of the Year at Houston Baptist last spring - and senior All-West Coast Conference honoree Tamara Surtees have allowed Santa Clara to remain positioned to crack the nation's top 100, despite going without all-league sophomore Taylor Camany, who is recovering from mononucleosis.

"We are really pulling together as a team, even though we've had some adversity and that's important," said Santa Clara's second-year head coach Krystal Kelly. "We have taken a closer look at things after playing at Stanford (in their 2012 opener Feb. 18-19) and have been focusing on scoring, and getting into a scoring mentality, trying to see who can make the most birdies in our practice rounds, getting more aggressive."

"That doesn't mean playing reckless or overly aggressive, but maybe not playing as conservatively. If we can get into a par-birdie mode right off the bat, I think we can be more successful."

Local rivals No. 67 San Jose State and No. 96 San Francisco will be in attendance next week in Fresno, along with No. 99 Wyoming and tournament host No. 71 Fresno State.

"This tournament will definitely be a challenge for us, but we will be real competitive," said Kelly, who guided the Broncos to a pair of tournament titles in the fall.
