FRESNO, Calif. - Balbina Guajardo (pictured) and Tamara Surtees turned in top 15 finishes at the 2012 Fresno State Lexus Classic at Copper River Country Club. The Santa Clara University teammates were both in position to contend for the tournament title after Round One Monday and battled tough scoring conditions Tuesday to complete the event among the top 15.
Surtees carded seven birdies en route to posting rounds of 72, 76 and 81 and finishing at 13-over par. Guajardo carded a team-leading 80 on Tuesday after rounds of 71 and 78 Monday. She also was at 13-over par for the event, with 36 pars and five birdies through 54 holes.
San Jose State's Madeieine Ziegert was the individual champion. Ziegert was 1-under par (70-72-73). Despite the individual effort from Ziegert, San Jose State was edged by Cal State Fullerton for the team title. The win for Fullerton was impressive, considering they out-played five schools ranked ahead of them in the national rankings. Santa Clara tied for 11th with overall team rounds of 303, 315 and 326.
