Bronco Golfers Take On Dove Canyon CC, Academic Finals

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara University women's golf team will contend with Dove Canyon Country Club and a regionally-dominated field of 15 schools Monday and Tuesday, March 26-27 at UC Irvine's 2012 Anteater Invitational.

The Broncos have seen upperclassmen Tamara Surtees (Waikoloa, Hawaii/Hawaii Preparatory Academy) and Balbina Guajardo (Monterrey, Mexico/American School Foundation of Monterrey) become fixtures on tournament leaderboards. Surtees was recently tabbed as an All-West Coast Conference preseason player and Guajardo has turned in five-straight top 15 finishes.

"Tamara and Balbina have both stepped up their games, their hard work is starting to pay off," said second-year Broncos head coach Krystal Kelly. "For Tamara, these are her last few college events, so I think she really wants to go out on top. As for Balbina, we made a putter change in January that mechanically is really helping her. It has resulted in more made putts and more confidence."

Kelly and her team should also get a boost from sophomore Taylor Camany (Salinas, Calif./Salinas), who is expected to make her first appearance of the spring after battling mononucleosis for the past few months.

Not only have the Bronco student-athletes been working hard on their golf games, it's finals week at Santa Clara. Studying and tournament prep have gone hand-in-hand over the past two weeks leading up to the event at UCI.

Last season the team placed three student-athletes on the WCC Conference Honor Roll, including Miki Ueoka (Biochemistry), Taylor Camany (Business) and Brooke Stephens (Business) pictured above.
