WCC Women's Golf Championship Report: Round One

2012 WCC Golf Championship – Tournament Central

HOLLISTER, Calif. –
Santa Clara University and its women's golf program saw junior Balbina Guajardo post an opening round 5-over par 77 to sit three shots off the lead after Day One of the 2012 West Coast Conference Golf Championships at San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister.

Guajardo had an up-and-down round, carding four birdies and nine bogeys. Guajardo, a transfer from Houston Baptist and the 2011 Great West Conference Player of the Year, is in a tie for ninth in her first start at the WCC's. Freshman teammate Kaci McCartan posted a 6-over par 78 and is tied for 12th.

"We will need to play a little smarter tomorrow, focusing on our course management," said second year Santa Clara head coach Krystal Kelly. "I thought overall (Balbina) hit the ball well and took advantage of some great shots into the greens."

Collectively, San Francisco built a four-stroke lead over second place Seattle, with third place Gonzaga just one shot out of second.  USF was led in the opening round by freshman Bethany Garton and junior Eyglo Oskarsdottir, who each tied for second with a three-over par. BYU's Maggie Yuan is the overnight leader at 74.
