WCC Women's Golf Championship Report: Round Two

2012 WCC Golf Championship – Tournament Central

HOLLISTER, Calif. –
Santa Clara University senior Tamara Surtees shot the day's best round to lead all women's players, posting a 1-under par 71 Tuesday at the 2012 WCC Golf Championship at San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister. The Broncos moved up to fourth place in the team standings with a collective round of 305.

Surtees birdied 5 of 10 holes during an impressive stretch of play midway through her second round, and will enter Wednesday's final 18 holes tied for 8th and just five shots off the lead. The senior from Waikoloa, Hawaii has been named an All-WCC golfer in each of her three previous seasons.

"Yesterday, I worked on my putting after the round because I knew that was the only thing I wasn't confident with," said Surtees who improved 11 shots from her opening round 82. "That really made the difference today. I was hitting it really solid, as I did yesterday, but the putting made the difference."

Teammate Balbina Guajardo is also in the mix, just five shots off the pace at 9-over par for the tournament thus far. Guajardo was able to par or birdie 14 of the first 17 holes and joins Surtees with a two-round total of 153.

"On the front nine, there was no wind at all," said Surtees about the ideal playing conditions on Tuesday. "But the wind did start to pick up a bit on the back nine and by 18 you definitely had to choose your clubs carefully."

Collectively, Pepperdine surged up the leaderboard as a team with a 296 in round two. Pepperdine's Alina Ching posted an even-par 72 Tuesday and leads the tournament individually at 4-over par.
