SCU Women's Golf to Play at Classic Club in Palm Desert

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara University women's golf team will make the trip down to Palm Desert, Calif. to compete in the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday. The event will be held at the Arnold Palmer designed Classic Club, which hosted the PGA Tour's Bob Hope Chrysler Classic from 2006-08.

The Broncos will be part of a 19-team, 103-woman field with two rounds on Saturday and one on Sunday. It marks the third event of SCU's 2012-13 fall schedule.

"The team is in a very good place mentally and physically," said Santa Clara head coach Krystal Kelly on Thursday. "I feel that they are really maturing in their respective games and it's really starting to show, in both the process and outcome. Two key words that we are using as a team are: engaged and opportunity. If we are engaged in the process, that will create the consistency we strive for, and thus the outcome we want. As far as opportunity, we have an opportunity everyday to be successful. Whether it's on the golf course, in the classroom or even within our team dynamics."

Kelly's incoming class of freshmen seems to be complementing the group's returners quite nicely. With 10 student-athletes on the roster, including proven stars Balbina Guajardo (Monterrey, Mexico) and Taylor Camany (Salinas, Calif.), SCU had the luxury to split squads and take two different teams to its two opening tournaments.

The newcomers include Ashley Noda (Roseville, Calif.) and Meghan Shain (Bakersfield, Calif.) who competed at Washington State's Cougar Cup in late September. Sadie Strain (Arbuckle, Calif.) and Monique Riley (Pleasanton, Calif.) debuted last week at Cal Poly's fall event in Nipomo, Calif.

"So far I'm really happy with my freshman class," said Kelly. "They just need to keep continuing on their process goals instead of the outcome goals. They are really soaking everything in right now, and its great to see them develop as more mature golfers and young women."

The Broncos return home to host the SCU Colby Invitational at Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 22 and 23.
