SCU's Colby Invitational Set for Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 22-23

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara University women's golf program is set to host the 2012 SCU Colby Invitational Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 22-23. The event features an 11-team national field and will be held at Silver Creek Valley Country Club in nearby South San Jose.

"I think everyone is excited to tee it up this coming week, it's a special week for SCU Golf," said Santa Clara head women's golf coach Krystal Kelly on Wednesday. "We get to honor some great people that have made a huge impact on our program. Most sports get the opportunity to play home games all the time, for us it doesn't work that way. I feel anytime you can play at home, it brings confidence, comfort or familiarity and competitiveness."

The tournament is named after Marygrace Colby, who was hired by Santa Clara in 1963 "to direct and instruct young women in recreational and athletic pursuits." For years Marygrace selflessly and single-handedly coached ALL women's sports at Santa Clara. The tournament medalist will be honored with the 'Bill Kahl Trophy' named after Bill Kahl, who was a professor in SCU's Leavey School of Business and a long-time member at Silver Creek Valley CC.

"Not only is it our home event, but it allows us to honor Marygrace Colby for all of her work and dedication to this University and its athletic department," Kelly said. "Professor Kahl had many of my players in his classes. He supported the program in so many ways, and touched so many lives, so it seemed very fitting to name the individual championship trophy in his honor."

Kelly has done a remarkable job recruiting and developing Santa Clara's student-athletes. All 10 Broncos on the 2012-13 roster will compete next week, including the reigning tournament champion, SCU's Taylor Camany (pictured).

"We are working to get better each and every day," Kelly said when asked about her current team and why they've excelled during final-round play this fall. "I think there are several factors that are contributing to that, such as, smarter course management, focusing on the process-committing to one shot a time, and what we call 'simple golf.'

Fans and supporters are encouraged to attend. Play will begin both days with 8 a.m. local tee times.
