SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara University women's golf team is in great shape after the opening day of its own 2012 SCU Colby Invitational at Silver Creek Valley Country Club in nearby South San Jose. The Broncos are just six shots off the lead as a team and senior Balbina Guajardo's first-round 72 has her in position to challenge for the title when play resumes Tuesday.

Not only did Guajardo - one of SCU's most experienced and accomplished players - finish among the top 10 Monday, but sophomore Casey Briggs shot a career-best 75 and is tied for ninth. Santa Clara's overall score of 307 was the team's second-lowest total of the 2012-13 season.

UC Riverside posted a collective 301 behind Amelia Ek's even-par 72 and leads the event going into final round play, which begins Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.
