SCU Women Aim to Repeat as Cal Poly Invitational Champions

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The 2012 Cal Poly Women's Invitational is next for the Santa Clara University women's golf team. The Broncos are coming off an excellent showing at their own SCU Colby Invitational last week in San Jose.

Team-scoring leader Balbina Guajardo (Monterrey, Mexico) continues to impress following her transfer to Santa Clara last fall. The senior, who was the 2010-11 Great West Conference 'Player of the Year' while at Houston Baptist, finished fourth overall last week with rounds of 72 and 75.

Guajardo is the defending individual champion at the Cal Poly Invite – and as a team the Broncos won the 2011 championship in Arroyo Grande.

Santa Clara head coach Krystal Kelly has brought in a number of young talented players to boost the depth of the team's roster this fall. True freshmen Meghan Shain (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Sadie Strain (Arbuckle, Calif.) were top 25 finishers last week at Silver Creek Country Club.

The event Monday and Tuesday of next week wraps up the Broncos 2012 fall schedule. Following the winter break, Santa Clara will tee it up in tournament play February, 11-12 at Yorba Linda Country Club in Southern California.
