Noda Paces Women’s Golf In First Round of WCC Championship

Bremerton, Wash. – Freshman Ashley Noda shot a 5-over-par 77 Monday to lead the Broncos to a fourth-place finish after the first round of the WCC Championship at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. Noda sits in a tie for eighth place, seven shots behind leader Grace Na of Pepperdine, who scored a 2-under 70 after the first 18 holes of play.

Senior Balbina Guajardo finished one shot behind Noda in a tie for 11th place with a 6-over 78 and the Broncos completed the first round of play with a team score of 316. The Broncos enter the second round of the tournament 23 shots behind team leader Pepperdine. The Waves are seeking their 12th straight WCC team title and hold a five shot lead over Gonzaga.

The Broncos trail BYU by eight shots for the No. 3 spot entering Round 2 and have never finished higher than third in the WCC Championship. Santa Clara has nine third-place finishes in the tournament with the last coming in 2009.

Taylor Camany, Meghan Shain and Monique Riley were separated by two shots in the standings. Camany was 8-over on the front nine but settled down nicely and played the back nine at even par ending her round with an 80 (+8). Shain completed her first round with a birdie on the 18th hole to finish with an 81 (+9) and Riley ended the day scoring an 82 (+10).

The Broncos will be grouped with USF and Cal State Bakersfield for the second round on Tuesday teeing off from the 10th hole starting at 8:10 a.m. (PDT). Live stats from Tuesday's round can be viewed here.
