Women’s Golf Places Fourth At WCC Championship

BREMERTON, Wash. – Sophomore Monique Riley recorded her first career top-10 finish leading the Santa Clara women's golf team to a fourth place standing at the West Coast Conference Championship, completed today at the 6,083-yard, par-72 Olympic Course at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.

The Broncos scored a final round 307 to end with a 54-hole total of 921 (+57), eight shots behind third place BYU (913) and 16 shots better than fifth place San Francisco (937). Tournament favorite Pepperdine won its 13th straight WCC tournament finishing 17 strokes ahead of Gonzaga with a three-day total of 877 (+13).

"We played well given the weather conditions," said head coach Krystal Kelly. "We would have liked to catch BYU and finish in third, but we learned a lot from this tournament."

After a personal-best 73 in Tuesday's second round, Riley fired a team-best 3-over 75 today to finish in ninth place, one shot better than teammate Annie Freman, to lead the team for the first time in her brief career with a tournament total of 227 (+11).

Despite a final round 4-over 76, Gonzaga's Alice Kim was able to fend off Pepperdine's Marissa Chow and Liv Cheng, and BYU's Alex White to claim individual medalist honors by three shots with an even-par 216.

Freman sandwiched scores of 77 around Tuesday's 74 to finish tied for 10th at 228 (+12). The WCC Freshman of the Year candidate finished among the top-10 nine times in her 11 events this season with an 11th place tie in another.

Senior Taylor Camany also had a final-round 77 to tie with teammate Meghan Shain, who carded a 78 today, for 15th place with a 233 (+17) total. Junior Kaci McCartan matched her second round score with today's 79 and finished at 240.

"The golf course played very long in the morning," Kelly added about the final round. "I am very proud of this team, they worked so hard this season, and I'm sure this will go down as the best season to date."
