Noda Two Shots Back After Day One Of WCC Championship

SOMIS, Calif. – Junior Ashley Noda fired a 4-over 76 to finish the first round of the WCC Championship two shots off the lead and the Santa Clara women's golf team placed fifth at the event being competed at the 6,085-yard, par-72 Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif.

No. 21 Pepperdine, the overwhelming favorite to win its 14th straight title, holds the lead at 311 after one round with all five teams within 14 strokes of each other in a very competitive field. The Broncos shot 325 Monday finishing one shot behind BYU (324) and seven shots in back of San Francisco (318). Gonzaga, ranked 50th in the recent Golfweek.com poll, shot 317 for second place.

"The course was very challenging today," Broncos head coach Krystal Kelly said. "This is the hardest course they will see in their collegiate careers."

Noda was one of just 11 golfers to score below 80 in the first round and led all players in par-3 scoring at 1-under finishing with a birdie and three pars on the four three-shot holes. Her 76 leaves her two shots behind leader Marissa Chow of Pepperdine.

"I'm very proud of Ashley," Kelly said. "She played very solid tee to green."

Four Broncos ended the day within four shots of each other on the leaderboard with freshman Kristin Le at 82, Annie Freman at 83, Monique Riley 84 and Meghan Shain 86.

Santa Clara will be paired with BYU and tee off the second round from the 10th tee box starting at 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday. Live stats are available at www.golfstatresults.com with a recap and results posted on the Broncos official website at the conclusion of each round.
