SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara women's golf team opens the spring portion of its 2015-16 season Monday at the third annual Matador Invitational. The 54 hole event will take place over two days at the 5,839-yard, par-72 Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley.
The Broncos are coming off a successful fall that saw the squad capture the team title at their own Colby Invitational, along with three other top-5 finishes in five events.
That success has coach Krystal Kelly looking ahead to the start of the spring season. "I feel really good about this tournament and our spring season," Kelly said. "Our team is playing really well so there could be some roster changes throughout the season."
Senior Monique Riley played the best golf of her career during the fall with a 74.2 stroke average. She scored a career-low round of 209 to take runner-up honors at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in October. Ashley Noda, the individual medalist at the Colby, joins Riley on the five-player team.
Annie Freman, Kristin Le and Cynthia Navis make up the remainder of Santa Clara's team. Meghan Shain, Isabella Salant, Kyleigh Moreno and Taylor Gentzkow will compete as individuals.
The Broncos navigated the challenging Wood Ranch course to a second place finish at last year's event, placing five strokes behind eventual champion Sacramento State. "Wood Ranch is a tough course," Kelly noted. "Course management is critical to scoring well. We will be challenged by windy conditions."
