LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Bolstered by their tournament-low final-round 298, Santa Clara women's golf climbed a spot on the leaderboard to claim fifth-place at the New Mexico State Aggie Invitational with a 901 total.
The Broncos entered the day in sixth-place after rounds of 301 and 302, but leapfrogged host New Mexico State into the top-5, just one-stroke behind UC Riverside for fourth. Sacramento State led the entire way to capture the team title at 9-over 873.
"I'm really happy with how the team played today because we had to count all four scores," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "They were focused and performed extremely well under pressure."
Senior Kyleigh Moreno withdrew from the final round and the Broncos were left with little margin for error. Instead, behind the play of senior Kristin Le and sophomores Chloe Wong and Marni Murez, the Broncos posted their lowest-score of the three-day event.
Le carded her second straight even-par 72 to finish in a tie for fourth-place at 2-over 218, five-shots behind individual medalist Kiselya Plewe of Weber State. Le was the tournament's best par-3 scorer and she tied for the most par-holes with 40. Le earned her eighth career top-5 finish.
Wong shot a final-round 1-over 73 to move up five spots on the leaderboard and into a tie for 15th-place with her 8-over 224 total. Murez tied for 20th at 11-over 227 after her final-round 2-over 74 moved her up four spots.
Competing in her first collegiate tournament, freshman Ritida Nanda finished with a 240 total to tie for 45th-place.
The Broncos return to tournament action on Saturday, October 28 for the first-round of the two-day Cal Poly Invitational in Arroyo Grande, Calif.
