LONG BEACH, Calif. – Scoring over 300 in the first two rounds, Santa Clara women's golf holds down ninth-place with a 611 team total after the first day of play at The Gold Rush.
The Broncos are only 12 shots out of the top-5 and will attempt to make up ground in tomorrow's final round, which is scheduled to get underway at 7:45 a.m. on the 6,189-yard, par-72 El Dorado Park Golf Course.
Competing in their first event of the spring season, the Broncos were consistent, scoring a first-round 306 and a second-round 305. They trail second-round leader Georgia by 20 shots and are only 12 strokes behind host Long Beach State, UC Irvine and Sacramento State, who all ended the day tied for fourth.
"It wasn't our best golf," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "We struggled to hit fairways today, so that will be a primary focus tomorrow. There's still plenty of golf left."
Individually the Broncos were led by senior Kristin Le and freshman Emily Sumner, who both ended the day tied for 15th at 6-over 150. Le had Santa Clara's low score of the day with a second-round 1-over 73. Sumner shot a second-round 2-over 74.
"Emily and Kristin played will in the second round," Kelly added.
Chloe Wong ended the day tied for 51st with a 155 total with teammate Kyleigh Moreno a stroke behind in a tie for 56th at 156. Isabella Salant carded identical rounds of 81 complete the 36 holes tied for 67th at 162. Competing as an individual, freshman Ritida Nanda carded a 164 total.
