Women’s Golf Heads To WCC Championship Starting Monday

VIDEO: WCC Championships Preview

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's golf completes its season at the three-day WCC Championship tournament beginning Monday. Teams will play a single 18-hole round over each of the three days on the 6,221-yard, par-72 Carlton Oaks Golf Club in Santee, Calif.

All five golf playing schools in the conference will compete in the event with BYU looking to defend its title from the past two years. Ranked No. 40 in the recent Golfstat.com poll, the Cougars are again the favorite. The Broncos enter the tournament at No. 101 and have never finished higher than third.

"I definitely think we're underdogs," head coach Krystal Kelly said of her squad. "But they've proven they can put some good rounds together."

The Broncos are coming off one of their better showings of the season when they took fourth at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic scoring all three rounds below 300 for the first time.

Seniors Kristin Le and Kyleigh Moreno will again anchor the squad. The two have played in every event this season with Le leading the team with a 74.12 stroke average. Complete team and individual statistics can be viewed here.

"It's been incredible to watch them take a leadership role with the younger players," Kelly said of her seniors. "It's been fun to watch because on a lot of teams you don't necessarily have that leadership."

Sophomore Chloe Wong and freshmen Sarah Busey and Emily Sumner will comprise the Broncos five-player team. Sumner is coming off her career-low 54-hole score when she carded a 221 in the last event.

"I think with the preparation we've done and the rounds that we played last week, they can do it," Kelly said of her team's chances. "They just need to believe in themselves and be patient. The easiest thing in golf is to get impatient. You hit a bad shot and you start pressing. As long as they can commit to the process and stay patient and wait for the opportunities, I think they'll be in really good shape."

First-round play is scheduled to begin Monday with tee times at 8:20 a.m. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
