VIDEO: WCC Championships Preview
SANTEE, Calif. – Santa Clara women's golf carded a 315 to end Monday in fifth-place, just 12 shots behind leader Pepperdine after the first round of the WCC Championship, taking place on the 6,221-yard, par-72 Carlton Oaks Golf Club in Santee, Calif.
Conditions were a factor with no team scoring below 303 and no individuals at or below par. Gonzaga's Jessica Mangrobang carded a 1-over 73 to take the lead into the clubhouse after 18 holes.
"We didn't play our best golf today," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "Our ball striking has been really good the last two weeks and we struggled to find it today. The hole locations and wind were a little challenging."
Pepperdine holds a 1-stroke lead over two-time defending champion BYU with Gonzaga 6-shots back and USF eight shots off the pace.
Freshman Sarah Busey scored the Broncos low-round with a 5-over 77 to finish the first 18 holes in 10th place. Senior Kyleigh Moreno and freshman Emily Sumner each carded a 79 to forge a tie for 12th while senior Kristin Le is a shot back of her teammates at 80. Sophomore Chloe Wong finished the round at 10-over 82.
"We had a good practice session after the round and we're ready to get back at it tomorrow," Kelly added.
Second-round action is slated to get underway with tee times starting at 8:20 a.m. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
