Women’s Golf Finishes Fifth At WCC Championship

SANTEE, Calif. – Santa Clara women's golf scored a final round 314 to finish fifth at the West Coast Conference Championship with a 945 total. The Broncos carded their lowest score of the three-day tournament on Wednesday, but it wasn't enough to make up ground on the leaderboard.

"In the end you can't base your entire season on three rounds of golf," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "It was a great season that was highlighted by plenty of growth."

Freshman Sarah Busey shot the Broncos low-score of the tournament with a final-round 2-over 74 to finish in 10th place at 14-over 230. It's the first career top-10 for Busey, who competed as a team member in the final five events of the season.

"Sarah played great this week and to get a top 10 in this field is a strong statement," Kelly said of her first-year player.

BYU's Rose Huang added to her second-round lead by scoring 69 on Wednesday, taking individual medalist honors by seven-shots over a pair of golfers. BYU also claimed the team title for a third straight season by beating Pepperdine in a playoff.

Senior Kyleigh Moreno carded a final-round 78 and was the only other Bronco to shoot below 80 on Wednesday. She ended the tournament in 15th place at 235.

"Not every course is going to fit your game and for us, this one definitely does not," Kelly said after Tuesday's second round. And the final round results weren't much better.

Senior Kristin Le and sophomore Chloe Wong both scored 81 on Wednesday. Le ended her Santa Clara career with a 238 to tie for 17th place. Freshman Emily Sumner carded a final round 83 to finish at 244 while Wong ended at 249.

"This tournament exposed some things we will work on for the future," Kelly concluded.
