Women’s Golf Busy This Summer - Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA Calif. – Santa Clara women's golfers have been busy on the links this summer, including one Bronco earning a trip to the U.S. Amateur.

• Sarah Busey, a sophomore in the fall, took home the Wisconsin Women's Match-Play Championship in June. She credits her putter and coach Krystal Kelly for getting her in shape for this win.

"My putter was just hot and it kept getting hotter throughout the round," Busey told Wisconsin.golf.

Busey took down qualifying medalist Emily Joers of Waukesha 3-and-1 before defeating UW-Green Bay golfer Ashley Kulka 6-and-5 on her way to the championship.

"I owe it all to coach Kelly," Busey said. "We have drills (for) bunker shots and chip shots and all types of lengths of putts from different angles. I've become such a better putter and chipper because of it. Getting stronger has improved my game entirely."

The following week, Busey finished tied for fifth at a local qualifier for USGA Junior Girls Championship. She shot a 1-over-par 71 to miss the cut by one shot.

• Incoming freshman Claire Choi qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship with an impressive performance in Hawai'i earlier this week. Her success was highlighted with seven birdies during the tournament.

"This is such a great win for Claire," Kelly said. "It was a great field and a she made a big statement."

Choi shot a 4-under 68 to become the top qualifier from the field. The U.S. Amateur will be held Aug. 6-12 in Kingston Springs, Tennessee.

• Emily Sumner, a sophomore this September, qualified for the Southern California Golf Association Championship. Earlier this week, she posted an even-par 72 to finished fourth in a qualifying event and will join fellow Bronco Marni Murez for championship, which will be held July 30-31 at the Valencia Country Club in Santa Clarita, California.

• Anne-Claire Tande, going into her second year as a Bronco this fall, participated in the Grand Prix de Strasbourg. Over three rounds, she went 80-71-74 to finish seventh.
