STATE COLLEGE, Penn. – Following a tough opening round to their season, Santa Clara women's golf responded over the second 18 holes to finish the first day of the Nittany Lion Invitational in seventh-place with a 607 (+31) total. Third-round play on the 6,321-yard, par-72 Penn State Blue Course gets underway Sunday morning.
The Broncos dipped to 11th place in the 16-team field after scoring a first-round 310. They moved up four spots on the leaderboard and wittled 13 shots off their score with a second-round 297. With a two-round total of 581, Washington has a four-shot lead over host Penn State.
"The golf course played extremely long in the first round and we struggled coming in," head coach Krystal Kelly noted. "However, they definitely turned it around."
Led by an even-par 72 from Emily Sumner, four of the five Broncos improved on their first round scores. Sumner ended the day tied for 23rd at 6-over 150.
Sophomore Sarah Busey carded a second-round 1-over 73 to lead the team with a two-round total of 5-over 149. She's tied for 19th with a trio of golfers.
Penn State's Sarah Willis grabbed the clubhouse lead at 6-under 138, three shots better than runner-up Maeve Rossi of Rutgers.
Chloe Wong shot a second-round 75 while Marni Murez and Claire Choi each scored a 77. Murez tied for 37th after 36 holes with a total of 152. Wong is tied for 59th at 156 and Choi is tied for 66th at 158.
"I'm proud of my team. I saw so many great shots in the second round," Kelly said.
Teams and individuals will begin Sunday's final round with a shotgun start at 6 a.m. PT. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
