SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's golf returns to an event where they've enjoyed plenty of success competing in the 12-team Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate this weekend. Hosted by the University of Wyoming, the two-day, 54-hole tournament will be contested on the 6,097-yard, par-72 Classic Club course in Palm Desert, Calif.

The Broncos tee off Saturday morning looking to retain the team title they won in each of the last two years. They set a tournament record with an 882 total in 2016 and captured the title by two-strokes over Hawai'i last year.

"At the end of the day it would be great to win," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "But if we focus on our game plan and process we should be able to post some good numbers."

The Broncos will field the same five-player team that took seventh-place at the Nittany Lion Invitational last weekend.

Sophomore Emily Sumner was Santa Clara's top individual finisher in the Broncos' first tournament of the season with a share of 21st-place at 7-over 223. Junior Marni Murez finished a shot back of her teammate last week, tied for 23rd at 224. Sarah Busey, Claire Choi and Chloe Wong will also compete.

Looking to end Santa Clara's two-year run as champions will be teams from Cal Baptist, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Montana, North Dakota, Southern Utah, Texas-Arlington, UC Riverside and UTEP.

A 7:30 a.m. PT shotgun start gets 36 holes of play underway on Saturday. The tournament concludes with a single 18-hole round on Sunday. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
