Women’s Golf Ties For Third At Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate

PALM DESERT, Calif. – Santa Clara women's golf saw its two-year run as team champion come to an end, instead settling for a third-place tie at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate with a 922 total.

The Broncos had their best round of the tournament with Sunday's final-round 304 to move into a tie with Cal Baptist at 922. The two schools finished 12 shots behind champion UTEP and four shots behind runner-up UC Riverside.

"We were able to get some great experience today," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "We had a great stretch after the front nine but had some trouble closing out the round. This tournament will definitely help us prepare for the rest of the season."

Individually the Broncos were led by sophomore Sarah Busey, who earned her best collegiate finish with a fifth-place tie by scoring an 8-over 224 total. Busey had her finest round as a Bronco with a second-round 2-under 70, ending the tournament six-shots behind medalist Jakeishya Le of UC Riverside.

Emily Sumner finished among the top-10 for the first time in her career with a 226 total good enough for a seventh-place tie.

Freshman Claire Choi had the Broncos best round on Sunday with a 2-over 74, allowing her to move up 14 spots on the leaderboard into a 19th-place tie with two other golfers with a 234 total. Marni Murez tied for 33rd at 238 (82-80-76) and Chloe Wong totaled 254 (88-81-85).

The Broncos take a few weeks off before returning to action Oct. 13 at the Pat Lesser-Harbottle Invitational, hosted by Seattle University at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club.
