SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's golf will compete in its second of five spring tournaments beginning Monday.
The Broncos, who finished third in the Battle at the Rock in Riverside, California, earlier this month, will be one of 15 schools participating in The Gold Rush, a two-day event in Seal Beach, California.
Santa Clara will utilize the same lineup as it did in the Battle at the Rock. Sarah Busey, Marni Murez, Emily Sumner, Claire Choi and Chloe Wong will tee off at 8 a.m. in a shotgun start on the par-72, Old Ranch Country Club course. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.
Sumner (73.80) and Busey (74.00) ranked first and second on the squad in scoring average this season.
"They are working really hard," Santa Clara head coach Krystal Kelly said. "It's been great to see our scores improving."
The field is headlined by San Jose State (36) and Georgia (38), which are both in the top 40 in the most recent Golfstat ranking. Kentucky (64) and Colorado State (73) rank among the top 75 and Santa Clara is No. 100. Fellow West Coast Conference members BYU (94) and Gonzaga (146) will also participate.
"This tournament has a great field, so it will be interesting to see where we finish," Kelly said. "This will be a good test for us. We played Old Ranch two years ago so I'm a familiar with the golf course."
Kelly would like her team to be aggressive on the 6,169-yard course that is nestled among 128 acres of lakes and tree-lined fairways.
"Like always, we will set our game plan and focus on the process," Kelly said. "We typically play a little too conservative on our first 9-12 holes."
