Women’s Golf 12th After 36 Holes Of The Gold Rush

SEAL BEACH, Calif. – Freshman Claire Choi entered the clubhouse tied for seventh-place on the individual leaderboard and Santa Clara women's golf sits alone in 12th-place with a team total of 606 after two rounds of The Gold Rush.

The Broncos had a strong start but faded to eighth after the opening 18 holes with a 302. A second round 304 left them 28 swings behind leader San Jose State. The Broncos are just 13 shots behind fifth-place BYU.

"We struggled today," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "Our ball striking wasn't as good as it's been the last few weeks."

Choi carded a personal-best even-par 72 in the first round and was 1-over in the second round, leaving her tied for seventh with two other golfers. San Jose State's Abegail Arevalo blistered the course to a 7-under 137 to take a three-shot lead into Tuesday's final round.

"Claire played well today," Kelly noted of her first-year player.

Sophomore Sarah Busey scored rounds of 74 and 78 to take a share of 38th at 8-over 152, one-swing better than teammate Emily Sumner, who totaled a 153 (76-77) and sits in a tie for 43rd.

Juniors Chloe Wong (80-76) and Marni Murez (84-86) were further down the leaderboard.

"We short-sided ourselves more than we normally do," Kelly said of her team's opening day performance.

The Broncos will attempt to make up ground beginning at 8 a.m. PT in Tuesday's final round on the 6,169-yard, par-72 Old Ranch Country Club course. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
