Women’s Golf Tees Off Monday At Fresno State Classic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's golf returns to action Monday at the 14-team Fresno State Classic, contested on the 6,200-yard, par-72 Copper River Country Club layout in Fresno, Calif. Teams and individuals will play 36-holes on the first day of the two-day event with a shotgun start format getting things going at 8:45 a.m. PT.

It's been nearly three weeks since the team last competed and the players are eager to put that 13th place finish at the BYU at Entrada Classic behind them. The Broncos placed outside the top-10 in their last two events after grabbing four podium finishes, including a victory at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational, in their opening five tournaments of the year.

"The team looks good," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "Their ball striking is much better than the last few weeks and they look refreshed."

Sophomores Emily Sumner and Sarah Busey will anchor the team from the No. 1 and No. 2 spot in the lineup. The duo, along with freshman Claire Choi, has competed in all seven tournaments. Sumner tops the squad with a 74.00 stroke average with Busey second at 74.33. They both have three top-10 finishes this year.

Returning to the lineup is junior Marni Murez, who did not compete in the BYU tournament. Freshman Duong Tran rounds out the Broncos five-player team.

Isabella Seeburger and Naomi Wong will play as individuals. This will be the first collegiate event for Wong.

"This course sets up well for them," Kelly added. "I'm excited to see what they post tomorrow."

The Broncos have enjoyed success at this tournament with a pair of individual titles. Miki Ueoka established a tournament low 54-hole score with a 209 in 2009. Annie Freeman has the 36-hole tournament record at 136 in 2016. Freeman's victory took place at San Joaquin Country Club.

Currently at No. 106 in the Golfstat.com poll, the Broncos will contend with four teams ranked above them. UC Davis at No. 71 is the highest ranked team in the field. No. 92 UTEP, No. 97 Fresno State and No. 105 Nevada are also scheduled to peg it up.

First round play begins at 8:45 a.m. PT with a shotgun start. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
