MARICOPA, Ariz. – Sophomore Sarah Busey scored all three rounds below par to match her personal-best 54-hole total for a share of second-place and Santa Clara women's golf completed its regular season with its third runner-up finish in the last five years at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic with an 884 total.
The Broncos gained a stroke on second-round leader UTEP with a final-round 296, but they needed to pick up two swings to forge a tie. They finished one-shot back of the Miners and one-swing better than third-place New Mexico State in a congested top of the leaderboard that saw the top five teams separated by just five shots.
Busey extended her streak of consecutive sub-par rounds to five with a final-round 1-under 71 for a career-best second-place finish. She carded 13 birdies over two days, the second-most among the 108-player field, and tied with Northern Colorado's Beah Cruz at 4-under 212, four shots behind wire-to-wire winner Suthavee Chanachai of New Mexico State.
Sophomore Emily Sumner also earned her fifth top-10 of the year by taking solo ninth with a 2-over 218 total.
Following her second-round 81, freshman Claire Choi made an impressive leap of 25 spots up the leaderboard with Tuesday's 1-under 71 to grab 16th place for her sixth top-20 in nine events.
Junior Marni Murez had a counting score of 79 on Tuesday to complete the tournament with a 236 total. Freshman Duong Tran ended with a 240 total after her final round 84.
The Broncos are off until the West Coast Conference championship tournament. The three-day event is scheduled to begin on April 18 at the Manito Golf and Country Club in Spokane, Wash.
