SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Sarah Busey of Santa Clara women's golf has been busy and productive this summer.
In June, she defended her Wisconsin State Golf Association Match Play title and earlier this week qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship.
On Tuesday, Busey fired a 1-under-par 71 at The Preserve at Oak Meadows in Addison, Illinois, to finish tied for fourth at U.S. Open sectional qualifying.
The top five advanced to the U.S. Women's Amateur Aug. 5-11 at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi. Courtney Dow (Frisco, Texas), Ami Gianchandani (Watchung, N.J.) and Auston Kim (St. Augustine, Florida) shared top medalist honors at 2-under in the 59-player field. Busey tied with Julia Potter-Bobb of Indianapolis.
Busey, who just completed her sophomore season, had to wait 2 1/2 hours to find out if she advanced.
"That got pretty nerve-wracking," Busey said to The Journal Times. "I prepared myself for a playoff, then when the scores came up, I was so excited."
After bogeying the opening hole, she birdied the par-5, 497-yard fifth hole and par-3, 146-yard eighth to make the turn at 1-under. Busey then scrambled to save par on No. 18, sinking a 10-foot putt on the par-4, 391-yard hole.
"(The U.S. Amateur) should be a great experience," Busey said of her first appearance in the event.
