SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Freshman Kristi Candau scored Santa Clara's first goal of the afternoon and third of the tournament to lead the Broncos to the Santa Clara adidas Classic title and earning herself Offensive MVP honors.

The 15th-ranked Broncos defeated No. 17 Wake Forest 4-1 this afternoon to conclude the tournament. The win marked Santa Clara's second come-from behind victory this season, after defeating Connecticut in double overtime earlier this month. Prior to this season, the Broncos hadn't been down in a match they won in four years. Santa Clara's record improves to 7-3-1, while Wake Forest falls to 6-4-1.

The Demon Deacons scored first, with Emily Taggart finding the net just 13 minutes into the match.

Each of Santa Clara's three freshmen responded with goals in the first half. Candau scored her fourth goal of the season off a pass from Kerry Cathcart during the 36th minute. Less than four minutes later, freshman Veronica Zepeda posted her fourth game-winner of the season. Freshman Chardonnay Poole celebrated her first goal of the season with a cartwheel at midfield after netting the ball just three minutes before the half.

Senior Rachel Weber added her fourth goal of the season at during the 79th minute.

"Some of our new players are really contributing," head coach Jerry Smith said. "Veronica is playing very well, Kristi had a great weekend, and Chardonnay really contributed today."

Olympic silver medalists Danielle Slaton and Brandi Chastain--fresh from Sydney, Australia--landed at San Jose's International Airport around kickoff and made it to the field just before halftime. Slaton immediately began warming up and played the entire second half in the Bronco defense. Chastain is an assistant coach for the Broncos.

"It's nice to have Danielle back," Smith added. "She just came from Sydney today. With her and Anna (Kraus) back and some of the other kids getting healthier, it will allow us to be fresher as the game goes on and come together as a team. We're looking forward continuing to improve and having a great second half of the year."

Earlier this afternoon, No. 13 Stanford shut out Wake Forest 5-0. Stanford goals were scored by Amy Sauer, Marcie Ward, Shauna Itri, Robyn DeHay and Marcia Wallis. Stanford improves to 7-2-1 and earns second place at the Classic. Weber State remains winless at 0-10-1.

Joining Candau on the All-Tournament Team were Broncos Zepeda and Heather Aldama, as well as the Most Outstanding Goalkeeper of the tournament Crystal Gordon. Sauer was named the Defensive MVP of the Classic.

Santa Clara remains at home and will open the league season when West Coast Conference opponent Gonzaga arrives for a Fri., Oct. 6 match at 7:30 p.m. The Broncos will also host Pepperdine on Sun., Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. Both matches will take place at Buck Shaw Stadium.
