Women's Soccer Wins WCC Opener with 3-1 Win Over Pepperdine

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Senior Rachel Weber posted her first game-winner of the season to lead the ninth-ranked Santa Clara women's soccer team to its fourth straight win in a 3-1 victory over Portland in WCC action this afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Weber scored at the 33-minute mark when she took a pass from Devvyn Hawkins and beat two defenders for a straight shot at the net. Aly Wagner posted the Broncos' first goal of the afternoon off a cross from Heather Aldama from the far side. Aldama capped the scoring with a goal in the second half.

Waves midfielder Lacey Ubaldi scored Pepperdine's lone goal of the match after collecting a goalkeeper deflection and scoring from 15 yards out during first-half play.

Santa Clara improves to 9-3-1, 2-0-0 in league play. The Waves lose their second straight to fall to 9-3-1 overall, 0-2-0 in the WCC.

The win extended Santa Clara's WCC winning streak to 19 victories. The Broncos have not lost a league match since a 1-0 overtime defeat to No. 3 Portland on Oct. 31, 1997. During this streak, the team has outscored the opposition 99-4 with 15 shutouts.

Santa Clara travels north next weekend for its first WCC road match. No. 18 Portland will host the Broncos on Sat., Oct. 14 at 2:15 p.m.
