SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara women's soccer defeated Cal Poly 3-1 tonight in NCAA First-Round action at Buck Shaw Stadium. The win was the Broncos' 18th in the postseason, as Santa Clara has advanced to the last 12 straight NCAA Tournaments.

Santa Clara improves to 14-6-1, while Cal Poly's season ends at 11-7-0. The Broncos, who have reached the semifinals seven times, including the last four straight, will travel to Berkeley to play California (17-2-1), the tournament's eighth seed, in a second-round match on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m.

Tonight's win also marked Santa Clara's second victory over Cal Poly this season, as the Broncos won in San Luis Obispo 2-1 to start the year.

The Mustangs came out aggressive and took the first shot of the match, a wide posting by Megan Schlegel. The Broncos' defense responded by not allowing another Cal Poly shot until midway through the second half. Cal Poly finished with six shots on the night.

The Broncos jumped on the scoreboard in the 15th minute. Junior midfielder Kerry Cathcart's shot from the right was deflected by Cal Poly goalkeeper Natalia Garcia, but the rebound went left, right in front of senior forward Megan Horvath, who sneaked the putback between Garcia and a defender

After the half, senior forward Kathleen Celio scored another Garcia deflection, with assists to Cathcart and senior midfielder Ruby Vigil. Freshman forward Kristi Candau posted the Broncos' final goal on the night on a breakaway.

Cal Poly's lone score came off a penalty kick that Schlegel scored in the 82nd minute.

The third round will be played Nov. 17, 18 or 19, with the fourth round on Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 24, 25 or 26. The semifinals and Championship matches will be contested at San Jose State University, Friday and Sunday, Dec. 1 and 3.
