SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Two current and three former Santa Clara University women's soccer players may compete this Saturday as the U.S. National Team takes on Mexico at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, S.C. The game will air at 4 p.m. Pacific Time on ESPN2.
Senior defender Danielle Slaton, a 2000 Olympic silver medalist, and junior Aly Wagner have been part of a 24-plyear training camp roster that was announced by U.S. Soccer in December. Also in the mix are former Broncos Brandi Chastain and Nikki Serlenga. The camp roster will be pared down to an active 18-player roster before the Mexico game and then again before the team embarks on a three-week tour in China. Midfielder Lisa Naņez, of the WUSA Champion San Jose CyberRays, will lead the Mexico National Team.
As of today, only 307 standing room only tickets ($18 each) remain for Saturday's match in Charleston, at the 5,113-seat venue. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster outlets throughout the Carolinas and Georgia (including Publix & Cat's Music) or by phone at 843-554-6060.
The U.S. Women's National Team's clash with Mexico at Blackbaud Stadium will be just the beginning of a three-week trek that will take the team across the world to China, where they will face Norway, Germany and China in the Four Nations Women's Tournament taking place in Guangzhou on January 23, 25 and 27, 2002. The team began training in South Carolina yesterday, where they will remain until Jan. 16 before they depart for China. The 24-player training camp roster was announced in December, and includes a strong mix of international veterans and up-and-coming stars.
