SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The 2001 Santa Clara University women's soccer national championship team was honored by the Santa Clara City Council tonight at City Hall.

"It's a real honor to have the team with us this evening," Mayor Judy Nadler said. "We know that a great deal of hard work, a tremendous amount of dedication and of course teamwork, culminated into this national championship. It's an incredible honor that you bring to yourselves, to the University and to the Santa Clara community."

On behalf of the City Council, Nadler presented head coach Jerry Smith with a proclamation and presented each player and coaching staff with a city medal.

"We only issues these on extraordinary circumstances to extraordinary people, and the Santa Clara University Broncos certainly fit the bill," the Mayor said.

"Thank you for honoring the team tonight," Smith said. "What I'd really like to do is thank the fans from the community that come out and support us at games. It really makes a big difference for us."

Afterward, the team signed autographs and took pictures with the young fans that attended the City Council meeting.
