STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman Leslie Osborne scored on a header off a corner kick for the second straight game to lead the third-ranked Santa Clara University women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Dayton at the Stanford Nike Tournament tonight at New Maloney Field.
With the victory, Santa Clara improves to 4-1 on the season while Dayton falls to 2-4.
With the match tied at one in the 84th minute, junior Aly Wagner served to the far side of the goal, where Osborne gained position and headed the ball in for the game-winner, a carbon copy of the Broncos' only goal Monday night against California.
Just 62 seconds later, senior Danielle Slaton's corner kick bounced of Dayton keeper Stephanie Weisenfeld, allowing freshman Lana Bowen to score on the put-back.
The Broncos got on the scoreboard early in the first half on senior Kerry Cathcart's follow-up shot, but the Flyers countered with their own score early in the second half after Tesia Kozlowski one-touched the ball into the corner of the goal off a free kick from Megan McKnight.
"Athletics requires a certain amount of passion and hunger, which every athlete in America is struggling to find right now," Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith said. "Our athletes are no different and it was very evident in our play the last two outings. We're sluggish. And it will be really hard to get back up to where we were a couple of weeks ago, but I have faith that at some point in the season, we'll get there."
The Broncos were scheduled to close out the invitational against Dartmouth at 11 a.m. on Sunday, but that contest has been cancelled, as the Big Green declined participation in the tournament earlier this week due to travel complications. Santa Clara will next be in action at home, hosting Stanford, Southern Methodist and San Diego State for the adidas Classic at Buck Shaw Stadium September 28 and 30.
