SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior midfielder Aly Wagner was named the most valuable player of the sixth annual Santa Clara adidas Classic after leading the sixth-ranked Santa Clara University women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over San Diego State in record temperatures this afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium.
With the victory, Santa Clara improves to 7-1 on the season while the Aztecs fall to 4-5.
The second half of the adidas Classic opened earlier this morning with eighth-ranked Stanford defeating Southern Methodist 4-0. The Cardinal earned first-half goals by Becky Myers and Marcie Ward and opened its lead with second-period scores by Marcia Wallis and Lisa Engel. Stanford remains undefeated and is 7-0 on the season. The Mustangs fall to 5-3.
Temperatures soared to 95 degrees during the second match of the afternoon.
"The heat really took its toll on our players today," head coach Jerry Smith said. "Combined with the number of injuries we had going into today's game, it was one of those games we had to grind out a good, solid performance. I'm happy with the win."
Santa Clara outshot SDSU 17-0 at the half and 27-3 overall. Wagner scored her third goal of the weekend off a low pass from freshman Taline Tahmassian. With three assists in Friday night's contest, Wagner notched a tournament-high nine points en route to MVP honors. Sophomore forward Kristi Candau converted a breakaway goal for the Broncos to open up scoring in the 27th minute.
The Broncos return to the field on Friday, for a Bay Area match-up against Stanford. That contest is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. at New Maloney Field in Palo Alto.
