Women's Soccer Shuts Out Gonzaga 10-0

SPOKANE, Wash. - Freshman forward Leslie Osborne netted two goals and two assists to lead the fourth-ranked Santa Clara University women's soccer team to a 10-0 victory over Gonzaga in West Coast Conference action this afternoon at Martin Field.

With the victory, Santa Clara improves to 11-1 overall, 2-0 in league play. The Bulldogs fall to 0-9-1, 0-2. Today's 10 goals ties the most scores in a match as well as the largest margin of victory. The Broncos previously accomplished both during the 1998 season, also against Gonzaga. SCU also recorded a 10-1 against Pacific in the 1982 season.

Osborne assisted on the Broncos' first two scores, by freshman forward Taline Tahmassian and junior midfielder Aly Wagner. She then added the Broncos' fourth goal of the match as well as its final score in the 80th minute. Tahmassian added the team's eighth goal of the game while freshman forward Bree Horvath substituted into the contest for two goals of her own. Also scoring for Santa Clara was junior midfielder Devvyn Hawkins, sophomore forward Kristi Candau and senior midfielder Kerry Cathcart. Descriptions on the goals were not available.

Junior goalkeeper Erin Sharpe earned the win for the Broncos and registered on save on the afternoon. She shared the shutout with senior Ynez Carrasco. The Bulldogs' Brooke Longacre took the loss, allowing all 10 goals and posting eight saves.

Santa Clara outshot the Zags 26-3, marking the third straight match SCU has registered more than 25 shots. In fact, the Broncos have outscored its opponents this week 21-1.

The Broncos return home to Buck Shaw Stadium and will host second-ranked UCLA on Thursday, October 18. That match is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. The Bruins were 2000 College Cup participants and are undefeated at 11-0 on the season. The Broncos return to WCC action on Sunday at Saint Mary's.
