Wagner Earns Third WCC Women's Soccer Player of the Week Honor

Oct. 23, 2001

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Santa Clara University junior midfielder Aly Wagner was named the West Coast Conference's Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the third time this season, after scoring three goals and one assist this weekend in handing both No. 3 UCLA and No. 7 Saint Mary's the first losses of their seasons.

Against the Bruins, Wagner had a hand in all three goals, assisting on Danielle Slaton's game-winner in the seventh minute. She added her own goals in the 55th and 70th minutes. On Sunday, she took a free kick 20 yards out in the 89th minute, kicking against the wind, but with enough finesse to bend it in for the game-winner.

She was named the conference's player of the month for September after earning the weekly honors twice. Her first honor came September 10 after a strong showing at the Nike Wake Forest Invitational. At that tournament, Wagner recorded her first career hat trick as the Broncos defeated then-No. 13 Florida State to close out play at the Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. She added her second recognition after leading the Broncos to two wins over the weekend at the Santa Clara adidas Classic. Wagner was named the most valuable player of the Classic after leading Santa Clara to victories over Southern Methodist and San Diego State. She netted a goal and handed out three assists in the Broncos 5-2 win over SMU and followed that outing with an insurance goal in the 2-0 victory over the Aztecs to claim the tournament title.

The Broncos continue West Coast Conference action this weekend in Southern California, traveling to Loyola Marymount on Friday and Pepperdine on Sunday. The contest against the Lions will begin at 3 p.m. in Los Angeles, while the Waves match is slated to start at 1 p.m.
