The honors keeps coming in for the 2001 Santa Clara University women's soccer team as three players were named to the NSCAA/adidas All-America teams Wednesday. Danielle Slaton and Aly Wagner were both selected to the first-team, while Veronica Zepeda was named to the third-team.
The honor for Slaton is her fourth All-America selection. The senior from San Jose, Calif., earned first-team honors in each of the last two seasons and third-team honors after her freshman year. In addition to her All-America selection Wednesday, Slaton has also picked up first-team All-West Coast Conference and All-West Region honors, and was named as a finalist for the Hermann Trophy in 2001.
Wagner's selection to the first-team was the first of her career after earning second-team honors in each of her first two seasons at Santa Clara. Like Slaton, Wagner earned first-team All-WCC and All-West Region honors, and was selected as a finalist for the Hermann Trophy in 2001. The junior from San Jose led the Broncos with 16 goals and 18 assists on the season, making her only the fourth player in Santa Clara history to record 50 points in a season.
Zepeda's selection to the third-team was the first selection to an All-America team in her career. The sophomore from Riverside, Calif. also earned first-team All-WCC and All-West Region honors in 2001. Zepeda's 25 points in 2001 came on nine goals and seven assists, making her the third leading scorer on the team.
Santa Clara will take on Florida in the second semifinal game of the NCAA Women's College Cup in Dallas, Texas, tomorrow evening at 5:30 p.m. The first semifinal match will feature North Carolina and Portland at 3 p.m. The two semifinal winners will face each other Sunday at 1 p.m.
