SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University junior midfielder Aly Wagner was named one of four finalists for the Honda Award for women's soccer, announced today by the Honda Awards Program. The winner will be announced on Monday. In addition to the honor of this selection, the Honda Awards Program will donate $1,000 to the women's athletic fund for each university. The winner's university will receive $5,000.
Joining Wagner is Florida's Abby Wambach, and Penn State's Christie Welsh and Joanna Lohman. Former Bronco standout Brandi Chastain won the award during the 1990-91 season. Other soccer award recipients include Mia Hamm, Tisha Venturini, Shannon MacMillan and Kristine Lilly.
The Honda Awards Program is in its 26th year and recognizes the top woman collegiate athlete in each of 12 sports. The trophy was established in 1977 by Thomas Broderick, founder and owner of a sports apparel company that bears his name. Honda took over sponsorship in 1987.
The honoree for the women's soccer collegiate player of the year will become an automatic nominee for the Honda-Broderick Cup, which is awarded annually to the national's outstanding collegiate woman athlete of the year through all NCAA competition, as chosen by a panel of college athletic directors. That winner will be announced June 17, 2002, at the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year Banquet, which will be held in Dallas during the NACDA convention.
Wagner, a San Jose, Calif., native, led Santa Clara to the program's first national championship last week in Dallas. She scored the game-winner during the title contest and added two assists in the semifinal en route to being named the College Cup's Offensive MVP. The first-team all-American finished the season with a nation-leading 20 assists en route to a 54-point season. Additionally, she was named a finalist for the Herman Trophy and Missouri Athletic Club Player of the Year award while being named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year.
