May 20, 2003

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's soccer team will close the spring season with a scrimmage against Stanford on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Cardinal's New Maloney Field in Palo Alto. After the match, the Broncos will attend a screening of 'Bend it Like Beckham,' a hit soccer movie that mentions SCU in the film.

The match vs. Stanford will mark the first since these two teams opened the 2002 season with a 3-0 Cardinal victory, in front of a record-setting 4,756 fans at Buck Shaw Stadium. Santa Clara was playing without three starters, who were fulfilling obligations with the U21 National Team. The Broncos went on to finish the season with a 20-5-1 record, and appeared in their second straight NCAA Championship match. SCU is 14-9-5 all-time against the Cardinal.

The Broncos will then attend a 9:30 p.m. showing of 'Bend it Like Beckham' at the Landmark Aquarius Theatre in downtown Palo Alto (430 Emerson St.). The event is open to the public and the coaching staff and team members will remain after the movie for a Q&A session. Adult admission is $9 while youths aged 3-11 is $6 and seniors 62 and older are $5.50.

Santa Clara began its spring season at Nebraska in April, and went on to win the 7v7 tournament in Berkeley. The Broncos also scrimmaged California, earning a 1-0 win behind a goal from Tracy Hess.

Santa Clara will aim for its 10th overall appearance in the College Cup with the start of the 2003 season. The Broncos' 20-match schedule features 12 programs that advanced to last year's NCAA Championship, included four of the top eight seeds. The Broncos will host eight of those matches at Buck Shaw. The season kicks off against UCLA at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 29. Last season, the Bruins were ranked third when the Broncos upset them in overtime in Los Angeles. Santa Clara is 4-0 against UCLA in the all-time series between the schools.
