Women's Soccer to Celebrate Santa Clara Community Day

Aug. 1, 2002

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The NCAA champion Santa Clara University women's soccer program will celebrate the "Santa Clara Community Day," set to take place Friday, August 30, when the second-ranked Broncos open the 2002 season against Bay Area Rival and fifth-ranked Stanford at Buck Shaw Stadium. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. with kick off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The Broncos are celebrating the community and asking fans to join local businesses and community organizations for an evening of Tradition, Family and Fun, as the Santa Clara Athletic Department honors the 2001 Women's Soccer National Champions and tries to break the Buck Shaw attendance record. The current mark for a regular season home match was set October 17, 1999, when 4,051 fans attended the Broncos' 4-2 victory over Notre Dame.

Sponsored by Bank of Santa Clara and the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce and Convention-Visitors Bureau , Santa Clara residents will be able to purchase tickets for half price off an adult admission for only $3.50 with a valid proof of residency, including a driver's license or utility bill.

"The Santa Clara community is such an important part of our athletics program, it is really exciting that we can involve everyone in this celebration," Director of Athletics Cheryl Levick said. "The first match of the season is always special, but with the defending national champions opening the season at home against a local rival, August 30 should be a most exciting night. We certainly appreciate the efforts of the Bank of Santa Clara and the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce and Convention-Visitors Bureau to help make this a memorable evening for everyone."

In addition to watching some of the top collegiate soccer in the country, the evening will also feature a pregame community fair and fan festival featuring local businesses and community organizations, the ceremonial raising of the 2001 NCAA Championship banner, and a post-match autograph session for all fans with the Bronco women's soccer team.
