Wagner Receives Olympic Club Soccer Award for Excellence

SAN FRANCISCO - Santa Clara University senior midfielder Aly Wagner received the Olympic Club's Female Soccer Award for Excellence for her performance during the 2001 season at the Club's annual collegiate soccer preseason banquet this afternoon.

"Aly's spirit is forever in this award," Olympic Club member Raul Artiga said as he presented the inaugural trophy. "Every person we honor from here on out will have the highest standard to aspire to."

Wagner, a San Jose native out of Presentation High School, was named the College Cup Offensive MVP after scoring the lone goal of the NCAA Championship game to lead SCU to its first national championship, topping defending champion and previously unbeaten North Carolina for the title. She added two assists in the semifinal. The first-team All-American finished the season with 54 points, including a nation-leading 20 assists. Additionally, the Honda Award winner was named a finalist for the Hermann Trophy and Missouri Athletic Club Player of the Year award while also being named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year.

Stanford's Lee Morrison received the Male Soccer Award for Excellence from the Olympic Club.
