Women's Soccer Fans Buying Tickets for Season Opener

Aug. 26, 2002

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - More than 1,250 fans have already bought tickets to the NCAA champion Santa Clara University women's soccer home opener this Friday. The athletic department will celebrate "Santa Clara Community Day," set to take place when the top-ranked Broncos open the 2002 season against Bay Area rival and fifth-ranked Stanford at Buck Shaw Stadium. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. with kick off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The Broncos are celebrating the community and asking fans to join local businesses and community organizations for an evening of Tradition, Family and Fun, as the Santa Clara Athletic Department honors the 2001 Women's Soccer National Champions and tries to break the Buck Shaw attendance record. The current mark for a regular season home match was set October 17, 1999, when 4,051 fans attended the Broncos' 4-2 victory over Notre Dame.

The evening, sponsored by Bank of Santa Clara and the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce and Convention-Visitors Bureau , will offer tickets to Santa Clara residents for half price, only $3.50 with a valid proof of residency, whether that be in the form of a driver's license or utility bill.

"The Santa Clara community is such an important part of our athletics program, it is really exciting that we can involve everyone in this celebration," Director of Athletics Cheryl Levick said. "The first match of the season is always special, but with the defending national champions opening the season at home against a local rival, August 30 should be a most exciting night. We certainly appreciate the efforts of the Bank of Santa Clara and the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce and Convention-Visitors Bureau to help make this a memorable evening for everyone."

In addition to watching some of the top collegiate soccer in the country, the evening will also feature a pregame community fair and fan festival featuring local businesses and community organizations, the ceremonial raising of the 2001 NCAA Championship banner, and a post-match autograph session for all fans with the Bronco women's soccer team.

Tickets are available in advance online by clicking here or by calling the Ticket Office at 408-554-4660. They will also be available at the gate.
