SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Santa Clara University women's soccer team defeated Clemson 4-2 this afternoon at Alumni Field in South Bend, Ind., to conclude action at the Notre Dame Classic, presented by Saint Andrews Products.
The Broncos, ranked 10th, improve their season record to 2-1, while the 13th-ranked Tigers fall to 2-2.
Senior Aly Wagner posted her first goal of the 2002 season with a volley from the right side in the 35th minute. Junior Veronica Zepeda dribbled down the left side of the field and crossed the ball to sophomore Megan Kakadelas, who then fed Wagner for the Bronco lead.
Zepeda starting the scoring in the 12th minute, when she beat a Clemson defender and dribbled toward the goal before shooting from six yards out. Her score beat Tiger goalie Leigh Ann Harrison low and to the right.
Clemson evened the game in the 26th minute with a 35-yard free kick that landed to the left of Bronco goalkeeper Alyssa Sobolik, but took a weird bounce that went to the right and over the outstretched arms of the SCU netminder, scoring the goal for Sarah Turner.
Junior Kristi Candau added her third goal of the weekend-and the third of today's contest-by faking a Clemson defender at the top of the key and scoring low and to the left just two minutes into the second period.
Wagner closed out Bronco scoring with her second goal of the day, taking a goalie deflection off Candau's shot and putting the game away in the 68th minute.
Clemson's Heather Beem put up the final tally with exactly one minute left in play. In the end, Santa Clara out-shot Clemson 19-9.
The All-Tournament team for the ND Classic will be announced after the Portland/Notre Dame contest.
The Broncos return to the Bay Area, but remain on the road, taking on 11th-ranked California and Cal Poly. The match against the Bears is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 13 at 4:30 p.m. in Berkeley, while the contest against the Mustangs is slated for Sunday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. in San Luis Obispo.
