Four Broncos Named to All-Tournament Team

Sept. 9, 2002

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Santa Clara University women's soccer team had four players named to the All-Tournament Team after an outstanding weekend at the Notre Dame Classic, presented by Saint Andrews Products.

Forwards Kristi Candau, Megan Kakadelas and Veronica Zepeda, as well as midfielder Aly Wagner, were named by tournament coaches and officials to the 11-member team. The complete list is below.

Wagner, who led the team with seven game-winners last season, posted her first of the 2002 season against Clemson on Sunday, with a volley from the right side in the 35th minute. Zepeda dribbled down the left side of the field and crossed the ball to Kakadelas, who then fed Wagner for the Bronco lead.

Zepeda starting the scoring in the 12th minute, when she beat a Clemson defender and dribbled toward the goal before shooting from six yards out. Candau added her third goal of the weekend by faking a Clemson defender at the top of the key and scoring low and to the left just two minutes into the second period.

Wagner closed out Bronco scoring with her second goal of the day, taking a goalie deflection off Candau's shot and putting the game away in the 68th minute.

On Friday against Notre Dame, the Broncos handed the Fighting Irish their worst home loss in program history. Candau scored the Broncos' second and fourth goals of the night. Kakadelas, a transfer from USC, had only one practice with the Broncos under her belt before substituting in the contest. Wagner played a ball to Kakadelas in the midfield, who then dribbled down the middle. Her first shot was blocked by Kent, but Kakadelas was able to score in the upper right corner on the rebound.

Kakadelas had a hand in the Broncos' second goal of the night, taking a long ball from Osborne and slotting the ball to Candau, who tapped it in from the near side just five minutes later. Candau closed the scoring for the night in the 80th minute, juking left around a defender and scoring.

The Broncos return to the Bay Area, but remain on the road, taking on 11th-ranked California and Cal Poly. The match against the Bears is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 13 at 4:30 p.m. in Berkeley, while the contest against the Mustangs is slated for Sunday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. in San Luis Obispo.
