Wagner Called to National Team for World Cup Qualifying

Santa Clara University women's soccer All-American Aly Wagner has been called up to the U.S. Women's National Team for the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup, the North American qualifying tournament for next year's Women's World Cup.

Wagner, a senior midfielder for the Broncos and the 2001 National Player of the Year, has represented the United States in 10 international matches this season and has scored one goal to go along with four assists.

The United States is one of eight teams from CONCACAF's North American region that will compete in the Gold Cup, beginning Oct. 27. Two teams will qualify from the tournament for the World Cup, to be played Sept. 24 through Oct. 11, 2003 in China.

The United States has been placed in Group 1 of the Gold Cup along with Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago and Panama. The group will play a round-robin schedule at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., Fullerton, Calif., and Seattle with the top two teams advancing to the semifinals. The final will be played Nov. 9 at the Rose Bowl.

After the November 2 game against Panama in Seattle, Wagner will join the Bronco squad in Portland for a match against the West Coast Conference rival Pilots the next afternoon. She is expected to return to SCU in time for the NCAA Tournament.
