Horvath Named WCC Player of the Week

Nov. 5, 2002

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Santa Clara University women's soccer sophomore Bree Horvath was named the West Coast Conference's Player of the Week, after scoring the game-winning goal in the 10th minute to lead the Broncos to a 1-0 victory over fourth-ranked Portland last weekend.

Horvath, of Danville, took the early lead at the 10:20 mark of the first half when two fellow sophomores helped her score her second goal of the season. Midfielder Veronica Zepeda played a ball to Megan Kakadelas, who beat her defender down the right line. Kakadelas centered the ball and waited for the Pilot keeper to make her move, before handing off the ball to a waiting Horvath, who tapped it in past Lauren Arase for the Bronco victory.

The win allowed Santa Clara, winners of four of the last five meetings against Portland, to hand the Pilots only their fifth loss all-time in home league matches.

The Broncos will end the regular season next week with two home contests at Buck Shaw Stadium. Santa Clara will close non-conference play against Pacific on Wednesday and then finish the WCC season against Gonzaga on Saturday. Both matches will begin at 7:30 p.m.
